Garage Door Won’t Open? Troubleshooting Guide

The most common reason a garage door won’t open is a broken spring or a dead opener — check the opener’s power and remote battery first, then look at the spring above the door for a visible gap or a sagging cable. Working through these steps in order will tell you which one it is before you call anyone.

Step 1: Check the Opener’s Power

Is the opener’s light on? If not, check that it’s plugged in and that the breaker hasn’t tripped. A simple power loss is the most overlooked cause of a “broken” door that isn’t actually broken at all.

Step 2: Check the Remote and Wall Button

Try the wall-mounted button first — if that works but the remote doesn’t, it’s a battery or pairing issue with the remote, not a door problem. Replace the remote battery before assuming anything more serious is wrong.

Step 3: Check the Safety Sensors

Most openers have two small sensors near the bottom of the track on each side. If they’re misaligned, dirty, or blocked, the opener will refuse to close (and sometimes refuse to open) as a safety measure. Look for a blinking light on either sensor — that usually indicates misalignment.

Step 4: Listen for the Motor

Press the button and listen. If you hear the motor humming but the door doesn’t move, that’s often a broken spring — the opener isn’t strong enough to lift the door’s full weight without spring assistance. If you hear nothing at all, it’s more likely an electrical or opener-motor issue.

Step 5: Look at the Spring

Above the door, check the torsion spring for a visible gap in the coil, or check for a snapped/sagging cable on either side. A broken spring is the single most common reason a door won’t open, and it’s not something to force — trying to open it manually with a broken spring can be dangerous.

When to Stop and Call a Technician

If you’ve confirmed power is fine, the remote works, sensors are aligned, and you still can’t get the door open — or if you can see a broken spring or cable — stop troubleshooting and call for emergency same-day repair. If it turns out to be the spring specifically, see spring repair. Forcing a door with a mechanical fault risks bigger damage and isn’t safe.

Troubleshooting FAQ

Can I open the door manually if the opener isn’t working?+

Usually yes, if the spring is intact — most openers have a manual release cord. Do not attempt this if you suspect the spring is broken.

Why does my door open but won’t close?+

This is almost always a safety sensor issue — check for misalignment or obstruction near the sensors on either side of the track.

Is it safe to keep pressing the button if the door isn’t responding?+

A few tries is fine, but repeatedly forcing it can strain the motor or worsen a mechanical issue. If it’s not working after checking the basics, it’s time to call for repair.
